Some of the commonly used
building materials may contain toxic chemicals, which can be harmful to human health and ecosystem.
Dioxins and Phthalates in chlorinated plastics
Chlorinated plastics like polyvinyl chloride (pvc) and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (cpvc)
have potential to produce dioxins. Dioxins are created during manufacturing process and when
chlorinated plastics are burned accidentally or intentionally. High exposure to dioxins can cause
reproductive and developmental problems, immune system damage, and cancer. Another toxic compound
found in pvc is phthalates, which is used to give pvc some flexibility.
Phthalates have harmful effects on the reproductive, respiratory, and
endocrine systems. Pvc is used in manufacturing of tiles coating, carpet, flooring, pipes,
furniture, corner guards and wall coverings.
VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
VOCs found in building materials include formaldehyde, acetaldehyde,
toluene, isocyanates, xylene, and benzene.
Heavy metals Heavy metals are used as stabilizers in vinyl, pvc, solder, wire insulation and
dyes for paints. The use of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium can cause
serious impact on human health and environment.
