MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) which is also known as the Metro or Subway is a type of transportation system to transport a large number of passengers rapidly. MRT is found in big cities around the world, where public transportation with large capacity and regular timing is needed.

According to the data from Department of Population and Civil Registration in November 2011, total population of Jakarta is 10,19 million. With a high population Jakarta needs a reliable, fast, secure and comfortable public transport system. MRT transport system is expected to give a solution to the traffic congestion in Jakarta. Surely congestion in Jakarta can not be solved simply by mrt project, but it could also be helped with policies such as ERP (Electronic Road Pricing) to reduce the intensity of the use of private vehicles. For the convenience of public transport users, an integrated public transport system to connect MRT with other public transport system such as the busway, public buses and Jabodetabek trains is required.

The rail-based Jakarta MRT is planned to stretch accross 110.8 kilometres. In phase I, the 15.7 km track will be built to connect Lebak Bulus and Bundaran HI. In the second phase, the track will be built to connect Bundaran HI and Kampung Bandan. MRT North-South Corridor Phase I (Lebak Bulus-Bundaran HI) is targeted to operate by the end of 2016. While the MRT North-South Corridor Phase II (Bundaran HI-Kampung Bandan) is targeted to operate in 2020. East-West Corridor is currently in the feasibility study stage and expected to operate in 2027.

Jakarta MRT Project is a national project, which is done by the Central Government of Indonesia with the local government of DKI Jakarta. The North-South Corridor Phase I is fully funded by the government through Japanese (JICA) loans. For the construction and operation of MRT Jakarta, Jakarta Provincial Government has established a government owned company, PT MRT Jakarta.
